January 2
One NSCN-K militant is killed by his colleagues when he along with four others tries to escape from the outfit’s camp at Samjiuram under Jalukie sub-division in the Peren district.

January 3
One crude bomb hurled by unidentified militants exploded inside the compound of the house of a retired government employee at Public Works Department Colony in Dimapur on. However, no casualty was reported.

Nagaland is brought under central rule after President Pratibha Patil signed the recommendation of the Union Cabinet in this regard. The President gave her assent to central rule in the State till elections are held in February 2008.

January 7.
A meeting of the Cease-fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) between the Government of India and NSCN–K was held in the capital Kohima. The ongoing inter-factional unification move and setting up of a NSCN designated camp somewhere between Ghaspani and Vihokhu village were reportedly discussed. The meeting also deliberated on a strict implementation of cease-fire ground rules by both parties and immediate establishment of NSCN–K’s authorised camps.

January 12
The NSCN-IM declares an "Emergency in Nagalim" and its Tartar Hoho (Parliament) was placed under suspended animation from 1 am of January 13. The ‘chairman’ of the outfit, Isak Chisi Swu, stated, "In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by clause (h), Article 3, of part III of the Yehzabo, I, Isak Chisi Swu, Yaruiwo of the Republic of Nagalim, by this proclamation, declare that an emergency exists." He said, "In view of the precarious situation in Nagalim which increasingly threatens peace and normal state of affairs… Henceforth, the state of affairs shall be conducted by the (outfit`s) National Security Council until further orders."

January 13
Eight militants of the Manipur-based KRA are arrested along with arms and ammunition from a house at Notun Bosti in Dimapur.


The former Nagaland Chief Minister and Nagaland People's Front (NPF) leader Neiphiu Rio asks the NSCN-IM and the NSCN-K not to interfere with the next round of Legislative Assembly elections to be held under President's Rule in the State.

January 14
Three senior cadres of the NSCN-K are shot dead and another cadre is abducted by the rival NSCN-IM militants in a hideout at Mingkong in the Mokokchung district, for their alleged involvement in extortion. The NSCN-IM stated that the killings were necessary to prevent "illegal collection of money in and around Mokokchung". Meanwhile, the NSCN-K claimed that the raid on its hideout and the killings were in violation of the cease-fire between the two factions since December 7, 2007.

The Dimapur district police arrested two persons, Atai M.S and Kaphungam Angami, while they were trying to extort money from a hotel. Nine rounds of ammunition, one empty magazine, six live rounds of 7.65, two live rounds of 9-mm and two mobile handsets with SIM cards are recovered from them.

January 20
Three NSCN-IM cadres, identified as Purtoshi Ao, Peter Akhum and Mayur Raijung, who are involved in arms smuggling racket, were arrested at Rangapahar Siding in the Dimapur district.

January 21
The NSCN-IM 'dismisses' 27 of its cadres, who had defected along with former 'kilo kilonser' (home minister) Azheto Chophi from 'national service' with effect from January 22, 2008, for 'deliberately defying' a directive of the 'yaruiwo' (prime minister) Isak Chishi Swu to return from the "reactionary camp" and report to the Council Headquarters. Samson Jajo, 'chief principal secretary' of the NSCN-IM, said a decision towards this effect was taken in exercise of the decision of the "National Security Council".

February 1
Police recovered the dead body of a poultry vendor, Podurul Islam, near 4th Mile area in the Dimapur district. He was earlier shot dead by four unidentified gunmen for ransom.


Police recovered the dead body of an unidentified person belonging to the Naga community from Sovima village in the Dimapur district. He was shot dead by unidentified militants.


Three NSCN-IM militants, Tokishe G. Swu, Asangba Santam and Nikhuyi, and Swu’s wife were abducted by the cadres of NSCN-U from Dimapur.

February 10
The NSCN-IM rejected a call given by the NSCN-K for broad based unity among Nagas and a halt to the fratricidal strife.

February 11
Police arrested four extortionists, including a NSCN-K cadre, and seized an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from their possession at Dimapur.

February 12
Shillong Times reports that the NSCN-K is reportedly continuing its recruitment despite its agreements with the Union Government.

February 13
Police arrested one person for collecting money in the name of 'Chaplee Committee' of the NSCN-U from the Supermarket area of Dimapur. Police said the accused, identified as Hukato Achumi of Xekiye village, had admitted to extorting money from businessmen after forcibly issuing demand coupons. Two coupons in the name of the NSCN-U, some cash and a mobile handset were seized from his possession.

February 14
Police arrested three suspected NSCN-IM cadres while they were collecting money from various shops at Holy Cross junction in Dimapur. They were identified as Moatoshi, Marlemba and Noklen.


Another NSCN-IM cadre, identified as Chandan Das, was arrested by the security force personnel while he was collecting money from businessmen in the New Market area.

February 20
The Adino faction of the NNC asks the people to boycott the Legislative Assembly elections scheduled to be held on March 5. The NSCN-K also warns of stringent action against its cadres in case of their failure to boycott the polls. The NSCN-IM, which had earlier asked to support candidates helping them in their pursuit for a solution to the protracted Naga political problem, says that it will not get involved in the election process.

February 26
Two persons, Talisubo and Yangersenba, are shot dead in an incident of pre-poll violence at Tzudikong town in the Mokokchung district.


Unidentified militants set ablaze two vehicles belonging to supporters of the Congress party candidate, K Therie, near Zuketsa village and took away another vehicle.

February 27
Two activists of the Nagaland People’s Front party are abducted by unidentified militants.

February 29
Police recovered the dead body of an activist of the Nagaland People’s Front party, Ngupe Lasuh, from Medzhephima He was earlier abducted by unidentified persons from the party camp at "D" Block in Kohima on February 27-night, and was later shot dead.

March 3
Two unidentified gunmen kill Farkanudin, chairman of the Dimapur Muslim Council and gaonbura (headman) of New Market, at his residence in Dimapur. He was a supporter of the Congress party.

March 5
Unidentified militants hurled a bomb at the residence of I. Imkong, Congress Legislature Party leader, at Sangtemla ward in the Mokokchung town. Imkong was also the Congress party candidate from 29 Jangpetkong Assembly Constituency in the elections held on March 5. However, no one is injured in the blast.


A major attack is averted in Dimapur when Assam Rifles (AR) personnel recovered a mine, two hand grenades and two AK-47 rifles meant to attack polling booths during the Legislative Assembly elections.


One self-styled ‘captain’ of the NSCN-IM is arrested by the police in connection with an extortion case.

March 11
Security forces arrested six militants of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland – United (NSCN-U), including a senior ‘commander’, along with a cache of arms and ammunition at United North block in Dimapur. The seizure include one AK-47 rifle with magazine, one .22 rifle, one double barrel 12 Bore DBBL, one 7.65mm pistol (Italian made) with three magazines, one.38 revolver and two Chinese grenades.

March 12
A 12-member ministry of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) led by Neiphiu Rio is sworn in by Governor K. Sankaranarayanan. Following the swearing in ceremony, Chief Minister Rio said that his Government would play the role of an active facilitator to bring about lasting peace, unity and oneness in the Naga family. "The need of the hour is peace and we will constitute a Political Affairs Committee at the earliest to strengthen our role of facilitator", he said.

March 13
One NSCN-K militant, identified as Kitoyi Zhimo of Zekiye village in the Zunheboto district, is shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Electrical Colony in the capital Kohima. Police recovered three empty cases, one live round of ammunition and one bullet head from the incident site.

March 16
One top NSCN-K militant, Kivi Kips, secretary of the Lota and National Social Welfare, and ‘Captain’ Vikiye Zhimomi, have defected to the NSCN-IM. Kips said in a statement, "Though holding no grudge or ill feelings towards any individual…I have realized that I had gone astray working without knowing that K- group neither holds political background nor future." In a separate statement, Zhimomi said some "political leaders at State" had misguided him and forced him to join the K-group.

March 28
Two NSCN-IM leaders, Hangsing and Longshen, are abducted from their respective houses by the NSCN-U. Meanwhile, the NSCN-U alleges that four persons were abducted by the NSCN-IM on March 25 in Dimapur and one of them was tortured resulting in his death.

April 3
Two NSCN-IM militants, identified as ‘captain’ Wungreithan and ‘sgt.’ Peter, are abducted by the rival NSCN-U cadres from the New Market area in Dimapur. The abduction occurs after both the groups had released their rival cadres from their respective captivity through the initiative of the Reconciliation Forum on April 2.

April 5
One NSCN-IM cadre, identified as ‘ss sgt. major’ Taku Ao, is shot at and wounded by suspected militants of the rival NSCN-K near Fancy Market in the Kohima town.

April 16
The Union Government and the NSCN-IM hold talks in New Delhi. The outfit’s ‘general secretary’, Thuingaleng Muivah, held discussions with the head of the Group of Ministers, Oscar Fernandes, and Chief Interlocutor, K. Padmanabhaiah, on issues of a separate constitution for Nagalim (Greater Nagaland) and the formation of a new faction, the NSCN-U in November 2007.

April 17
Two cadres of the NSCN-U, identified as ‘2nd Lt.’ Alex Sema and ‘Sgt. Maj.’ Sukuithong, and one from the rival NSCN-IM, identified as ‘Lt.’ Shondhar, are killed while another cadre from the NSCN-IM is abducted in three separate incidents of factional violence in Dimapur.

April 22
Two NSCN-U militants, ‘capt’ Atovi and ‘sgt maj’ Pukheto, and two NSCN-IM militants, ‘pvt’ Thachan Tangkhul and Y. Tangkhul, are killed during an internecine clash between the two outfits at Tenyiphe-I near St. Joseph’s School along the road towards Khopanalla in Dimapur. Two unexploded grenades were recovered by police personnel from the incident site.


A clash between militants of the NSCN-U and NSCN-IM occured at Singrijan in the Dimapur district along the Assam-Nagaland border.

April 23
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that "The state government and the constituent units of the DAN will support the cause of the Eastern Nagas in Myanmar to help them get due political recognition and rights from the Government there… They have been neglected by Yangon. The Nagas in Nagaland should unanimously support them to facilitate their development along with other Naga communities." He also asked the military regime in Myanmar to declare a truce with the NSCN-K.

April 24
A factional clash between the NSCN-U and the NSCN-IM is averted when people chased away cadres belonging to both the factions at Diphupar ‘B’ and Ikishe villages in the Dimapur district.


The NSCN-K said that it would extend its cease-fire with the Union Government for another year. The tenure of the cease-fire agreement expires on April 27.

April 25
One India Reserve Battalion constable, Hanji Konyak, is shot dead by unidentified militants near the National Highway-39 in the Dimapur district.

April 29
One cadre of the Non-Accordist faction of the NNC, identified as ‘sgt. maj.’ Rutsuthung Pochury, is injured by cadres of the rival Accordist faction of the NNC during an internecine clash at Jericho-II Colony in the Phek town.

April 30
One ‘deputy kilonser’ (minister), Nemalie Metha, and a ‘joint secretary’, Kahoi Chaplee, of the NSCN-IM are abducted by the rival NSCN-U from Dimapur.


One self-styled ‘colonel’ of the NSCN-IM, identified as L.Y. Shanga alias Yurthing, dies when a lethod bomb accidentally explodes in his hand at Camp Hebron in Dimapur. He was reportedly operating as the ‘commanding officer’ of the NSCN-IM’s ‘NP Battalion’ in the Tamenglong district of Manipur. Meanwhile, the NSCN-U alleges that Shanga was ‘executed’ at Camp Hebron on the suspicion of his attempt to defect to the NSCN-U.

May 1
Two civilians and a NSCN-U cadre are killed during an internecine clash between the rival NSCN-IM and NSCN-U militants at Old Showuba village under Niuland sub-division in the Dimapur district.

Hundreds of people chase out the NSCN-IM and National NSCN-U militants engaged in a internecine clash at Diphupar in the Dimapur district.

May 10
The NSCN-K kilonser (minister) Kughalu Mulatonu accuses the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Opposition Leader I. Imkong of funding the NSCN-IM with INR 15 crores and INR 5 crores respectively, just before the Assembly Elections in March 2008. Imkong, however, refuted the allegation. "I urge Mr Mulatonu to come out with facts and evidence to prove his allegations. This is not the first time he has tried to drag me into controversies," Imkong, the Congress party leader, said.


The Chief Minister accuses the Centre of not being "sincere" in talks with the militant groups, and said that there was no clear direction from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs about what was the fate of talks with the NSCN-IM. "Definitely, the delay (in talks between NSCN-IM and Centre) is the cause of all the problems. It is getting multiplied. We want to see the sincerity of the Government of India and the underground groups to resolve it," Rio said in New Delhi after his meeting with the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

The Cease-Fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) asks the NSCN-K to shift its 'Unification' camp at Vihokhu in the Dimapur district to avoid further clashes with the NSCN-IM, since the camp is not a ‘Designated Camp’.

May 11
The Jalukie police recovered the dead body of an India Reserve Battalion personnel, Vikoto Sumi, from a place between Keyive and Heningkunglwa in the Peren district.

May 12
An internecine clash between militants of the NSCN-IM and the NSCN-U occurs at ‘Tinali Teak Bagan’ between Xelhozhe and Seithekiema ‘A’ in the Dimapur district. Police said there were no reports of casualty on either side. However, the Gaon Bura (village head) of Old Showuba village, Lithrung, quoting an NSCN-U source said that one of its cadres was injured in the clash.

May 14
An internecine clash between the NSCN-IM and the NCSCN-U is averted in areas surrounding Khehokhu, Hoito and Nihoto in the Dimapur district when the villagers asked the warring militants to vacate their villages. Schools in the areas were closed due to a fear psychosis.

May 16
At least 14 cadres of the NSCN-K and the NSCN-U are killed by the rival NSCN-IM militants during an internecine clash at Seithekema C village in the Dimapur district. Two civilians were later killed by the NSCN-IM militants when they opened fire on people who attacked the cease-fire monitoring cell of the outfit located in the same area.

May 18
Assam Rifles personnel arrested three cadres of an unspecified faction of the NSCN during an operation to implement the cease-fire ground rules in Dimapur.

The NSCN-IM ‘appoints’ its senior leader, Kughalu Mulatonu, as an emissary to the ‘Collective Leadership’. The portfolio of ‘Chaplee (Finance) Ministry’ held by him is reallocated to V. Tuccu.

May 23
The NSCN-U said that Nagaland is not Gaza Strip to rehabilitate "others". The outfit added that the NSCN-IM ‘general secretary’ Th. Muivah's intent of "advocating communism and consequent annihilation of thousands of Nagas in the name of sovereignty thus far, is discovered to be nothing but a policy of rehabilitate deprived Nagas of Manipur in Nagaland State and that the economy of the Nagas of Nagaland has been drained into 'their' private coffers".

May 24
One unidentified NSCN-IM militant is injured during a factional clash with cadres of its rival group at Mokokchung.

Another businessman is abducted from Burma Camp Bazaar in Dimapur. The report adds that over 60 affluent non-Naga traders were abducted for ransom since November 2007.


The NSCN-IM ‘chairman’ Isak Chisi Swu speaks to the NSCN-K ‘chairman’ S. S. Khaplang to accelerate the reconciliation and unification process between the Naga militant outfits.


A joint meeting convened by the Nagaland Joint Forum of goan buras (village chiefs) and dubashis (chiefs of Naga customary courts) at Red Cross building in Kohima resolved to ask all the factions to agree to a one year cease-fire between them with effect from June 7, 2008.

May 28
One NSCN-K militant, Zakaito Zhimomi, and a civilian, Vihugha Aomi, are abducted from Showuba village near Vihokhu camp in Dimapur and later shot dead by the NSCN-IM militants. Two other persons were also abducted by the NSCN-IM militants from the incident site. Police later recovered a burnt motorcycle from the same site.


A round of talks between the Union Government and NSCN-IM is held in New Delhi. The Government's interlocutor K. Padmanabhaiah and a NSCN-IM team led by ‘Brigadier’ Phungthing Shimrang participated in the dialogue. "Both parties are working out various ways to attain a satisfactory solution to the long standing Naga problem," said an unnamed NSCN-IM source.

May 29
Assam Rifles accused the Myanmar Government for its inaction on Northeast militants taking shelter in that country. "We had given detailed information on the number and location of militant camps of the Northeast militants in Myanmar, but they are yet to respond," said the outgoing Director-General of Assam Rifles, Lt. Gen. Paramjit Singh.


NSCN-IM militants assaulted some civilians, including a mother and school staff, at Pimla in Dimapur. Following the assault, the Aqahuto Sumi Totimi Hoho (apex body of Sumi Nagas, ASTH) served a deadline to the NSCN-IM ‘commander’ to tender an apology, failing which "the ASTH will march to Hebron camp for the justification."

June 1
The Union Government appoints M. L. Kumawat, Special Secretary (Internal Security) of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as Chairman of the Cease-fire Monitoring Group (CFMG) and Cease-fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) in Nagaland. Kumawat takes over charge in New Delhi. According to sources, "Gen Kulkarni has miserably failed to stop the inter-factional clashes and implement the agreed Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR) in the state, for which the MHA has replaced him by Mr Kumawat." The sources add, "The appointment of MHA officer as the chairman of the CFMG and CFSB is likely to change the entire insurgency scenario and lead towards a peaceful atmosphere in this decades-long insurgency-affected State."

June 2
Unidentified militants abduct and later shoot dead two persons at East Block in Dimapur. The slain persons are identified as ‘2nd Lt.’ Supongnungsang Longchar of the NSCN-IM and his driver Jyoti Joshi.


Nagaland Police rescues a trader while being abducted by three unidentified militants at Army Supply road. However, the militants managed to escape leaving behind the vehicle in which they were carrying the trader who was tied and blindfolded. One AK-47 along with 38 live rounds is also recovered from the vehicle.

June 3
At least four NSCN-IM militants desert the Camp Hebron in Dimapur and joined the rival NSCN-K in the Zeliangrong region. They are identified as ‘2nd Lt.’ Akishe, ‘Sgt. Maj.’ Tukam, ‘Sgt.’ Injang and ‘Cpl’ Alex. They also bring one sniper rifle with three magazines, one AK 56 rifle with one magazine, one SLR with two magazines and two .303 rifles with two magazines.


The NSCN-IM says that the Union Government and the "NSCN" never agreed to work out a solution within the parameter of the Constitution of India.

June 4
At least 15 cadres of the NSCN-IM and NSCN-U are killed in separate factional clashes in and around Dimapur. Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM says that following the clash people set ablaze the residence of one NSCN-IM ‘lieutenant col’, Elijah, at Purana Bazar in Dimapur.

June 6
Armed cadres of NSCN-IM and NSCN-U are evicted from the civilian areas, when the Dimapur District Co-ordination Group assisted by around 800 armed police, India Reserve Battalions and Assam Rifles personnel conduct a thirteen-hour ‘flush out’ exercise in different colonies of Dimapur town and also in the nearby villages.

June 7
One NSCN-IM militant, identified as ‘captain’ Avito, is killed by the rival NSCN-U militants at Super Market area in Dimapur.


Personnel of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) arrest four NSCN-U militants in the Tuensang district. An AK-56 rifle, one M-22, two pistols and money are recovered from them.

June 9
The NSCN-IM states that the residence of a woman, Marthar, was set ablaze by the NSCN-U militants at Burma Camp in Dimapur.

June 10
One ‘sergeant major’ of the NSCN-IM is killed by the rival NSCN-U militants at Tseminyu town in the Kohima district.

June 13
Two persons are abducted by suspected militants from the Supermarket area and later shot dead inside the Kohima local ground. The victims are identified as M. Puto, and Lusang. While Puto is a Home Guards personnel hailing from Panso ‘A’ village, Lusang is hailing from Kingniu village, both under Noklak police station in the Tuensang district. Police also recover some demand notes of FGN "chaplee affairs" from the possession of one of two slain persons.


A meeting of the Cease-fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) between the Union Government and the NSCN-K is held at Chumukedima near Dimapur. Official sources say that the discussion took place on shifting the Vihokhu camp of the outfit to a new location at Khetoi under Niuland sub-division in the Dimapur district.

June 14
One NSCN-U cadre, Chuba Phom, is shot dead by unidentified militants along Chate River in the Dimapur district.

June 18
Army arrested the ‘publicity secretary’ of the Black Widow (BW), identified as Paiprang Dimasa, and a NSCN-IM militant from a hotel in Dimapur. While Paiprang is handed over to police, the NSCN-IM militant was released.

June 19
Assam Rifles arrested four NSCN-IM cadres while travelling in a vehicle from Dimapur towards Ukhrul along Piphema road under Medziphema police station. One AK-47 rifle, two 9-mm pistols, one 7.62-mm pistol, one 12 Bore rifle, one Chinese grenade, assorted ammunition, explosives and radio sets are recovered from them. The two NSCN-IM cadres were released after producing valid identity cards, while two others along with recovered weapons are handed over to police.

June 21
Telegraph reports that the Naga Reconciliation Forum, headed by Baptist clergyman Wati Aier, Baptist World Alliance and UK-based Quaker group, will organise the second round of reconciliation meeting of the Naga factions, mass-based Naga organisations and tribal Hohos at Chiang Mai in Thailand sometime next week.

June 23
One NSCN-IM cadre, Tsengpeng, is killed during a factional clash with the NSCN-U militants in Dimapur.

June 25
One NSCN-IM cadre, Venda Shan, is shot dead by the NSCN-U cadres at Tsetungse village near Dimapur.

June 26
Seven NSCN-U militants are killed when their main camp located at Vihokhu is overrun by the rival NSCN-IM militants. All the leaders of the NSCN-U camping at Vihokhu have reportedly fled and over 45 vehicles belonging to the militants of the camp have also been burnt down completely.

June 30
One NSCN-K leader, A.Z. Jami, deserts the outfit due to differences of opinion. "I have already submitted my resignation to chairman Khaplang," he says.

July 2
The NSCN-K cadres say that the Union Government has permitted their outfit to establish a designated camp at Khehoi near Dimapur.

One NSCN-K militant and a civilian are killed in an attack by the NSCN-IM cadres near Dimapur. According to NSCN-K sources, heavily-armed NSCN-IM cadres attacked its hideout at Hetoi village in Dimapur district and following an exchange of fire a civilian is killed.


NSCN-IM blamed the Khaplang faction for the rise in extortion and abduction activities and said that it is determined to flush out the NSCN-K cadres from the area and will not allow any designated camp of its rival group in the Dimapur district.

July 9
Two NSCN-K cadres, Khuzheto and Hokiye Yeptho, are abducted and later shot dead by the rival NSCN-IM militants at Diphupar village in the Dimapur district. The NSCN-K sources claimed that three NSCN-IM cadres were also killed in the clash.

The dead bodies of two persons, abducted by suspected militants from Kohima on July 9 and later shot dead, are recovered along the National Highway-151. They are identified as Avito and Aloto.


Assam Rifles personnel arrested one NSCN-IM cadre, Aphong Tangkhul, while he was moving from Patkai Bridge towards Seithekima village ‘C’.

The Union Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernandes said that the NSCN-IM has met senior Government functionaries at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and is "inching towards accepting the Indian constitution." "Top leaders of the NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah) recently met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and top officials of the PMO," the Minister said. "Yes, I have been meeting them regularly and have had several rounds of successful discussions. I can say with some degree of confidence (that) they are inching towards accepting the Indian constitution," Fernandes stated.

One NSCN-IM militant, R.V. Sahrünü, is abducted and later shot dead by the NSCN-K militants near SKV petrol pump area in Kohima. Sahrünü’s nephew was also abducted with him.


Dimapur district police recovered the dead body of a NSCN-K militant, Hotovi Yeptho, who was killed by the rival faction.


India Reserve Battalion personnel arrest four NSCN-K cadres from the Hong Kong market area. One AK-56 rifle along with 36 live rounds, two empty magazines of AK-56, one empty magazine of .32 pistol and a motorcycle were recovered from their possession. They are identified as Nasaka Kinny, Akuluto, Boshito Awomi and Avikato Awomi, all from of Satami village in the Zunheboto district.

July 15
The NSCN-IM asks all public leaders and civil society groups to restrain from keeping personal guards with arms on the "pretext of security matter." "In the event of any undesirable/unwanted incident taking place out of non-compliance of the government directive, the concern person shall be solely held responsible," said a press release issued by the outfit.

July 16
The Kohima district police recover the dead body of a person, Shevota Rhakho, near Merema village along the National Highway-61. Shevota was shot dead by unidentified militants. Three empty cases of AK-47 bullets are recovered from the incident site.


A. Z. Jami, who recently deserted the NSCN-K, joins the rival NSCN-IM group along with ten others from the Lotha region.

The Dimapur district police recover the dead body of a NSCN-IM cadre, Hokheshe Kinimi, from the Burma Camp area. Police also recovered four empty cases of 9-mm from the incident site. According to unconfirmed reports, Hokheshe had recently defected from the rival NSCN-K.

July 23
The Diphupar police recovered the dead body of a person, Raju Mandal, near Sugar Mill village at 5th Mile in Dimapur. The NSCN-IM alleged that Raju, a son-in-law of its leader Vikheshe, was shot dead by the rival NSCN-U.


Two persons, J.G. Lorin and nephew Tenyenlo Kemp, are shot at and wounded by unidentified militants on the New Secretariat road in Kohima.

One person, Hutovi Achumi, is shot dead by three unidentified militants at Railway Crossing, below the Fly Over Bridge, in the Zunheboto district. Two empty cases of 9-mm pistol were recovered from the incident site.

One trader, Sandeep, is killed by suspected militants in Dimapur. The NSCN-U alleged that he was killed by five NSCN-IM cadres.

One NSCN-U cadre, Avikhe Chophy, is shot at and wounded by three unidentified militants in Dimapur. Police recovered an empty case of .32 from the incident site.

One non-local trader, Swapan Chandra Das, is shot at and wounded by two suspected militants in Dimapur. Meanwhile, a new survey report said that business has fallen by 30 per cent in Dimapur because of the militancy. According to intelligence sources, NSCN factions have extorted over INR 200 crore from Dimapur alone in 2008. ‘Taxes’ are collected by militants in the presence of the police and security agencies at check gates.

August 18
One NSCN-IM militant, ‘capt’ David Tangkhul, is killed by unidentified militants at his residence near Razhu Point in Kohima.


One NSCN-IM militant, ‘capt’ Ashun Tangkhul, is abducted from a bus at Jotsoma in Kohima when he is on his way to Dimapur.

August 20
One gaonbura (village headman) and a member of the Dobashis (chiefs of Naga customary courts) Joint Forum, identified as P.P. Zeliang, is shot dead by the NSCN militants at his residence in West Yard Colony in Dimapur.


An Army convoy is attacked during crossfire between the NSCN-IM and NSCN-K at Khermahal area in Dimapur.


Police arrest one NSCN-K cadre, ‘2nd Lt’ Akato Yepthomi, during a search operation at Kalibari junction. One M20 pistol with 16 live rounds, two magazines and a mobile phone are recovered from his possession. Akato had earlier defected from the NSCN-IM.

August 25
One NSCN-IM cadre, identified as ‘2nd Lt’ Moatoshi’, is shot dead by unidentified militants at Rail Bazaar road in Dimapur. The NSCN-IM accused its rival NSCN-K for the killing.

August 27
One NSCN-IM militant, ‘s/s sergeant major’ Thomas Poumai, is shot dead by unidentified militants at Lower Lerie colony in Kohima. Police recovered five empty cases of 9-mm pistol from the incident site. The NSCN-IM accused the NSCN-K of killing Thomas.


Around 30 NSCN-IM militants attacked a combined force of the NSCN-K and Black Widow (BW) militants between Jalukie and Phaijaing in the Peren district. While the NSCN-IM sources said there was no casualty on their side, the rival group’s senior functionary, Singson Kuki, said two NSCN-IM cadres were injured. Police confirmed that there are no casualties.


The security forces are reportedly flushing out the NSCN cadres from Niu colony in Dimapur. Neighbours have been requesting the cadres to vacate the colony and return to their designated camps.

September 2
One civilian, Mahesh, is killed and another civilian, Sibu Thakur, is wounded when two suspected militants open fire at a bar in Sewak Colony in Dimapur. Four empty cases of AK-47 are recovered from the incident site.


One NSCN-K cadre, ‘sgt maj’ Aghato alias Ghotovi, is injured by the rival NSCN-IM militants during a factional clash at 3rd Mile in Dimapur.

September 3
Nagaland Police arrest two NSCN-IM militants, identified as ‘lieutenant’ Among Pochury and ‘sergeant’ Anito Sumi, during a search operation at Hotel De Oriental Dream in Dimapur. Police recover one AK-56 assault rifle, three AK-56 magazine, 128 live rounds of AK ammunition one locally made pistol, two pistol magazines, one Chinese live grenade and two cellular phones from their possession.

September 4
Nagaland Police arrest two persons, including one NSCN-K cadre, while trying to extort money from people at Walford colony in Dimapur. Police recover one .32 country made pistol along with five live rounds of 7.65 caliber from their possession. They are identified as ‘sergeant’ Zakato Achumi and Hetozhe Achumi.

September 9
Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen informs the State Legislative Assembly that altogether 144 people, including 110 militants, 31 civilians and three security personnel, are killed in insurgency-related incidents in Nagaland from January 1 to August 15, 2008. He further says that a total of 21 people are arrested by police in connection with insurgency-related violence and booked under the National Security Act. He adds that that from May 2006 to July 2008, the State police and security forces have seized 155 pistols, ten carbines and stenguns, 33 AK rifles, one SLR, 24 assorted rifles, 17 SBBL, 12 grenades and 15,344 rounds of assorted ammunition.

September 9 and 10
The leaders of the NSCN-IM and NSCN-K meet at the Akuvuto Baptist Mission Centre near Dimapur under the aegis of the Church-led Forum for Naga Reconciliation. They agree to work out the modalities for the merger by September 25. Besides the two NSCN factions, representatives of the NSCN-U and Naga National Council are also present in the meeting.

September 10
The Mokokchung District Police recover dead bodies of two NSCN-K cadres, Aoluin and Moajungshi, at a forest between Khensa and Chungtia villages.

September 12
The dead body of one NSCN-K cadre, identified as ‘s/s’ SO Hukato Achumi, is recovered near Delhi Public School in the Dimapur district. He is blindfolded and his hands are tied behind. He is shot on the forehead.

September 13
The Dimapur police recover the dead body of a National NSCN-K cadre, ‘s/s’ SO Vito Chishi, from Chathe River near Ekranipathar . He is shot on the back of the head and his eyes are blindfolded and hands tied behind.

September 14
The dead body of a non-local teenager, Uttam Das, is recovered near Naga Hospital in Kohima. Police also recover an empty shell of 7.65 pistol from the incident site. He was reportedly abducted by unidentified militants from his place of work in D Block area on September 13-evening.

September 15
The NSCN-IM militants kill one NSCN-K cadre, identified as Japheth Rengma, after abducting him from Paramedical area in the Kohima district. Police recover a 7.65-mm pistol, three live round ammunitions and one empty shell from the incident site.

September 17
The Mokokchung district police recover the dead body of a NSCN-K cadre, Imdongsungba, from a place along the Tuensang Road. Police says he is shot by the rival NSCN-IM. Police also recover ‘NSCN/GPRN’ tax collection booklet of Ao region from the slain cadre.


The Dimapur district police arrest two extortionists, including one NSCN-K cadre, while demanding money from traders at Church Road. They are identified as ‘pvt’ Vitokhu Chophy of the NSCN-K and Kaboto Awomi. They have been collecting money ranging from INR 200-500 from each shop at Church Road. Police recover INR 11,760 and two cellular phones from their possession.

September 18
A NSCN-K cadre is killed by the rival NSCN-IM militants during a factional clash at Forest Colony in Namsa of Mon district. The slain cadre is identified as ‘pvt.’ Omwang of Chingphoi village. The report adds that the NSCN-IM attacked a temporary camp of the NSCN-K resulting in the exchange of fire between the rival cadres.

September 20
One NSCN-K cadre, Mughaho, is killed and three others, including a civilian, are injured when three unidentified militants open fire on three NSCN-K cadres at a hotel at Burma Camp bazaar in Dimapur.

September 22
A barber, identified as Arjun Thakur, is injured at 4th Mile near the cease-fire monitoring cell office when suspected NSCN-K militants open fire on some NSCN-IM cadres having haircuts inside a saloon. However, the NSCN-IM cadres manage to escape unharmed.

September 23
The village heads of Nagaland decide to stop collecting "taxes" for the NSCN factions, a "duty" they have been discharging for over four decades. The ostensible reason for the resolution was to protest the outfits’ failure to understand their "good deeds".


One NSCN-IM militant, identified as Moatoshi, is shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Rail Bazaar road near a petrol pump opposite Dimapur Railway Station. Police recover three empty cases of .32 and two empty cases of AK Rifle from the incident site and one pistol with three live rounds, full magazine, two mobile hand sets and Rs.13, 350 from the possession of the slain militant.

September 24
A factional clash between the NSCN-IM and the rival NSCN-K militants occurs at 4th Mile near Diphupar ‘A’ gate along the National Highway-39 in Dimapur. Police recover nine empty cases of AK-47 from the incident site.


A confrontation between India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel and NSCN-IM cadres occurs at New NST area in capital Kohima. According to police sources, the confrontation ensues following the refusal of the NSCN-IM militants to vacate the civilian area.


The Gaonburas (village heads) and public elders of Pungro sub-division in the Kiphire district appeal the NSCN-K to release the Gaonburas, Village Construction Committee (s), Village Council Member(s), Village Development Board secretaries from Longkhimvong, Khong, Khongjiri and Mimi Villages under Pungro sub-division, within three days.

September 26
One NSCN-IM cadre, identified as ‘Lt’ Starling, is shot dead by unidentified militants outside a photocopy shop opposite Chishi Complex in Circular Road in Dimapur. Police later recovered three empty cases of 9-mm and a vehicle belonging to the slain militant from the incident side.


Police arrest one NSCN-K cadre, identified as "Lt" Bokato, during a search operation along the GS Road. A .32 country made pistol along with two empty magazines and 12 live rounds of 7.56 caliber are recovered from his possession.

September 28
A NSCN-K cadre, Tokheho Aye, is chased and later shot dead by unidentified militants near Telephone distribution box at Tinali near Duncan Bosti junction in Dimapur. Police also recover 7 empty cases of AK 47 ammunition and one 9-mm empty case from the incident site.


An India Reserve Battalion personnel, Zhapulie Koza, is wounded when unidentified militants open fire on him near the PHQ Police point in Kohima.


The NSCN-IM says that its leaders met Maharashtra Governor Dr S.C.Jamir in New Delhi through the initiatives of the Ao Senden (apex Ao Naga tribal council).

October 1
A NSCN-M cadre, Keduokholie Mere, is abducted by unidentified militants from his residence at Chandmari colony in Kohima and later shot dead at Aradura hill. Police also recover one empty shell of 9-mm pistol from the incident site.

October 2
Police manning Khuzama Check Gate arrest two women travelling in a Guwahati-bound bus from Imphal, for possession of arms. They are identified as Nganong Memcha and Ningthonjam Devi. Police seized two 9-mm pistols and 13 live rounds from them.

October 3
Three NSCN-K cadres are killed when the rival NSCN-IM attacks a transit camp of the NSCN K at Lower Agri colony in Kohima. Police recover 108 empty cases of AK 47, 42 empty cases of 9 mm pistol and the safety pin of a grenade from the place of incident.

October 4
A militant outfit belonging to the Kuki tribe captures three bullet tankers, engaged in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas to the Sekmai Bottling Plant, at Dimapur in connection with monetary demands. The outfit reportedly threatens the Indian Oil Corporation that the tankers would be set ablaze in case of its failure to meet the demand.

October 6
Unidentified militants open fire on the main road near a branch of the State Bank of India at Lerie in Kohima, damaging two vehicles. Police recover one empty case of 9-mm and 7.65 pistols each.

October 7
A combined force of the Dimapur District Police, India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and Assam Rifles personnel recovers arms and ammunition during two simultaneous search operations at Niu Colony and Ao Kashiram under West police station. The recovery includes 190 rounds of AK-47, 74 nos. cartridges (pellets), 12 rounds of 9mm pistol, one round of .38 pistol, 5 Chinese hand grenade, 12 safety fuse, 5 detonators, 3 mobile batteries, one mobile charger and 12 badges (insignias) of the NSCN.

October 11
A NSCN-K cadre, Nekavi Chishi, is shot dead by the rival NSCN-IM militants at Diphupar village in the Dimapur district. Two empty shells of M 20 and a motorcycle are recovered from the incident site. According to police sources, Nekavi defected from the NSCN-IM.

October 15
Telegraph reports that the peace talks between the Union Government and the NSCN-IM will be held at Hague in the Netherlands. Samson Jojo, the ‘chief principal secretary’ of the GPRN, political wing of the NSCN-IM, says the talks will take place in the last week of October 2008. The report adds that nearly 60 rounds of talks were held between the Union Government and the NSCN-IM both within and outside the country.


A former employee of a construction company, identified as Farid Ansari, is shot dead by unidentified militants outside a beetle shop along the Circular Road in Dimapur. Police recover three empty cases of 7.65 from the incident site.

October 16
A trader, identified as Prashantjit Dhar, is abducted by five unidentified militants from his residence at Lhomithi colony in Dimapur. The abductors have reportedly demanded a ransom of INR 20 million for his safe release.


A NSCN-K militant, ''sergent major'' Honkin Mukan Chang, is arrested by a joint force of Nagaland Police and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) from Khermahal area. While two other militants manage to escape, one 9-mm pistol along with five live rounds is recovered from Honkin.

October 17
Two NSCN-K cadres, Amuhato and Kevi Koza, are arrested by a joint force of Nagaland Police and the India Reserve Battalion during a search operation at Kohima town. Two.32 pistols and 35 live rounds are recovered from their possession.

October 19
The dead body of a NSCN-K militant, identified as ‘corporal’ Khriebu Pochury, is recovered from an unspecified place in Kohima. Khriebu was reportedly abducted by the rival NSCN-IM militants from Electrical colony in Kohima on October 17 and was later shot dead. Meanwhile, the NSCN-K says that the NSCN-IM on October 17 were also trying to abduct Vikuto Rengma, ‘chairman’ of Rengma region of the NSCN-K at taxi stand in Kohima, but their abduction attempt was foiled by the intervention of India Reserve Battalion personnel.


The Dimapur district police arrests two cadres, including one each from the NSCN-K and NNC for illegal possession of arms at Khermahal junction. They are identified as ‘pvt’ Longshe Khemunger of the NSCN-K and ‘corporal’ Songyei Khemunger of the NNC. Police recover a 9-mm country made pistol from their possession. Police say the duo was sent from Tuensang for a mission in Dimapur.

October 20
Personnel of the India Reserve Battalion arrest three NSCN-K cadres while traveling along with arms in a vehicle at Agri colony junction in Kohima. They are identified as ‘sergeant’ Tseuthungo Lotha, ‘sergeant’ Vibou Angami and ‘sergeant major’ Khehoto. An AK-56 rifle with two magazines, four 9-mm pistols with 74 live rounds, one hand grenade and 60 live rounds of AK-47 are recovered from their possession.

October 21
A NSCN-K cadre, Sanchamo Ezung alias Mark Ezung, is arrested by a joint force of India Reserve Battalion and Dimapur district police personnel during a search operation near Holy Cross school junction. A .32 pistol along with eight live rounds of ammunition is recovered from his possession.

October 24
A person, Akbar Ali, while extorting money from shops in the name of Non-Accordist faction of the NNC is arrested by Nagaland Police near Bata Charali area in Dimapur. Police recover several money receipts of the faction from his possession.

October 25
A NSCN-K cadre, identified as self-styled ‘private’ Hopeto Sumi, is killed by the rival NSCN-IM militants at Phaiphijang Colony in Dimapur.

October 26
The drivers of three goods carrier trucks coming from Manipur are abducted by suspected KLA militants at Home Pipe area in Dimapur, in connection with monetary demands to the respective truck owners. The trucks are attached to the Food Corporation of India (FCI).

October 27
Three truck drivers, belonging to Manipur, abducted from Dimapur on October 26-evening by suspected KLA militants, are later released, after they pay the ransom worth INR 15,000 to the abductors.

October 28
The manager of a restaurant, located at N.L. Road near Latika Hall in Dimapur, is abducted by two unidentified militants from the restaurant and later released.

October 29
The dead body of a non local trader, abducted and later killed by suspected militants, is recovered from lower Bye-pass near Kohima town. The slain trader is identified as Suresh Kumar Yadav from Motihari district in the State of Bihar.

October 30
A suspected NSCN-K cadre, Kehoi Sumi, is shot dead by unidentified militants near Zion Hospital while returning to Dimapur town from the hospital in an auto rickshaw. Police recovered six used shells of AK-47 from the incident site.

October 31
Two NSCN-IM cadres, Akato Sumi and Hureya Sumi, are arrested by the India Reserve Battalion personnel during a search operation at Railway Bazaar in Dimapur. An m.20 pistol, one country made 7.65 pistol, two magazines, 29 live rounds, a mobile hand set and INR 6485 are recovered from their possession.

November 1
A trader, Muglish Rehman, is shot at and wounded by unidentified militants armed with M20 and 7.65-mm caliber pistols near Central Plaza in Dimapur.

November 4

Four NSCN-K cadres have defected to the NSCN-IM camp in the Mokokchung district. A declaration to this effect is made by the NSCN-IM.

November 5
Assam Rifles personnel arrested three NSCN-K cadres while travelling in a vehicle in the Cathedral area under Kohima South police station in Kohima. Arms and explosives, including one AK-56 rifle and 57 live rounds of ammunition, are recovered from their possession.

November 6
The Dimapur District Police and India Reserve Battalion personnel arrest 14 suspected KNF cadres in two simultaneous separate search operations in Dimapur, and rescue one driver earlier abducted by the suspected militants. Police recovered eight mobile handsets, one 7.65 pistol with five rounds, one .9mm pistol with eight live rounds and some documents from their possession.

November 10
The Dimapur district police arrest two NSCN-IM cadres near central jail junction for trying to threaten some under training India Reserve Battalion personnel. They are identified as ‘lieutenant’ Neibulie Sophie and ‘corporal’ Mungo Chang. Police recovered one country made .38 pistol with 11 live rounds, mobile handset and INR 695 from their possession.

November 13
The Dimapur district police arrested a NSCN-K cadre when he was extorting money from traders at Hong Kong Market area. He is identified as Athrongmong Pochury, a ‘Leacy’ in the NSCN-K.


A timber trader from Manipur, Chongtham Sanjoy alias Dada, is assaulted severely by some armed persons identifying themselves as NSCN-IM cadres at Dimapur, in connection with a monetary demand of INR 10, 5000.

November 19
A non-local trader is abducted by unidentified militants from a hotel in Dimapur. Police said the trader had been doing business in Nagaland and Manipur for the last 20 years and used to frequently stay in hotels whenever he was in Dimapur.

November 20
Nagaland Police recover the dead body of a non-local, Lolan Shah, from Vidima village under Diphupar police station in the Dimapur district. Lolan, a resident of 5th Mile in Dimapur, was killed by suspected militants.


Two truck drivers out of the three abducted by unidentified militants a day earlier near Kohima Municipal Corporation dumping site are later released near Meriama. Police said the duo walked many kilometres up hill after they were released by their captors near Meriama. However, the third driver is yet to be traced.

November 21
Telegraph reports that the Northeast-based insurgent groups smuggled huge quantities of sophisticated arms and ammunition across the India-Myanmar border in October 2008. The NSCN-K displayed M-series rifles, AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers, RPGs and other ammunition at Zunheboto in Nagaland on October 26 and even issued a press release to that effect. Union Ministry of Home Affairs sources said there were more than 30 AK-47 rifles, about 40 M-Series rifles and 200 grenades. Intelligence reports said nearly 100 cadres, led by one Niki Sumi of the Khaplang group, transported the contraband to Nagaland with the help of Meitei outfits in Manipur. The NSCN-IM is also reported to be in contact with Thai arms smugglers who get arms and ammunition transported through the India-Myanmar border with the help of local agents.

November 25
Troops of 37 Assam Rifles arrested a ULFA cadre during a search operation along Lungwa-Phomching road in the Mon district. He is identified as Dhanti Dutta of Sonari in Assam. A 303 rifle along with magazine and 10 live rounds and other incriminating documents are recovered from his possession.

November 28
The Kohima district police recovered dead bodies of two persons shot dead by suspected militants in separate places at Chakhabama near Dzü river.

November 29
14 persons, including nine teenaged boys and five village guards of Purr village under Phek district, are abducted by suspected NSCN-K cadres, for their subsequent conscription into the outfit.


Assam Rifles personnel detect presence of armed cadres of the NSCN-IM at Seithekima near Patkai Christian College in the Dimapur district. Subsequently, a stand off between security force (SF) personnel and NSCN-IM cadres ensues when the latter are asked to vacate the civilian populated areas.

December 1
A former NSCN-IM cadre, Vikashe Zhimo, is shot at and wounded by two unidentified militants at Notun Basti junction in Dimapur. Police recover three live rounds and one fired bullet of M20 pistol from the incident site.


The NSCN-IM cadres are compelled by the SF and district administration to vacate the civilian populated area at Seithekima near Patkai Christian College in the Dimapur.

December 2
A clash occurs between unidentified militants at Notun Basti in Dimapur. Police recover two 7.65 empty shells and one AK-47 live round from the incident site.

December 4
Telegraph quoting the NSCN-IM sources reports that peace talks between the Union Government and the outfit, which was supposed to be held in Hague, would instead take place in Amsterdam, capital of Netherlands, from December 7 to 9.

December 11
Nagaland Post reports that the NSCN-K alleges that its khapur (tax collector), Theja Kent Rengma, is killed by the rival NSCN-IM militants at Tsosinyu village in the Kohima District.

December 20
The three-day 4th ‘Naga Peace Summit’ under the banner of Forum for Naga Reconciliation held at Chiang Mai in Thailand concludes with participation from representatives of the NSCN-K, NNC and Naga National Workers People Support Group, Quakers, American Baptist, and Naga church leaders. However, the NSCN-IM has not participated in the reconciliation meet.

December 22
The Tizit unit of Konyak Union ‘notifies’ that non-Nagas of Tizit area would acquire an Inner Line Permit (ILP) within January 2009. The Union would be conducting ILP checking at Tizit area with the administration, police and student bodies as per the inner line regulation 1873. A press release issued by the unit’s general secretary H. Yeangmao and president Pen Kham stated that many non-Nagas have settled in Tizit which is situated in the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and are working in various industries, including agriculture, tea gardens, and private schools.
